2 - February - World Wetland Day -

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International importance was signed on this day in 1971. Various government, non government agencies undertake action to raise public awareness of benefits of wetlands to the environment.

21 - March - World Forestry Day -

This concept came into being in the year 1971 during the 23rd General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture. UN’s Food and Agriculture also supported the idea as this day highlights the need of planting more trees to increase the area under green cover. 21st March being the autumnal equinox in South Hemisphere and vernal equinox in the Northern was chosen as a day to celebrate this day to make people aware of 3 important aspects of forestry i.e. production, protection and recreation.

22 - March - World Water Day -

This day highlights the importance of conservation of water as the sources are depleting at a rapid pace. It was accepted by UN General Assembly on 22 December 1992 to be observed from 22 March 1993 onwards with the initiative of United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio De Janeiro. This day hence became a day dedicated to promote public awareness on conservation and development of water resources

23 - March - World Meteorological Day -

This day highlights the importance of role of weather as a part of our environment. It commemorates the date of entry into force of the convention which created the World Meteorological Organization in 1950. But the day was celebrated only from 1961 onwards.

7 - April - World Health Day -

This day commemorates the constitution of WHO- World Health Organization in the year 1948. It aims to create awareness about global health issues and problems.

18 - April - World Heritage Day -

It was approved by UNESCO at the General Conference in 1983 and was known as “International Monuments and Sites Day”. This day is an effort to increase public awareness about importance of protecting and conserving our diverse cultural heritage.

22 - April - Earth Day -

It was on this day in the year 1970, that the US senator, Gaylord Nelson called for a response towards the environmental problems being faced by earth due to modernization. To commemorate this, each year this day is celebrated as the Earth Day.

12 -13 - May - World Migratory Bird Day -

It was first celebrated on the weekend of 8 and 9 April 2006 with an objective of highlighting the need for action to protect migratory birds and their habitats. It was started by initiative of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement and
Convention on Migratory Species

22 -May - International Day for Biological Diversity -

This day is also known as the World Biodiversity Day and focuses on promotion of biodiversity issues. It holds a UN sanction.

31 - May - World No Tabacco Day -

This day highlights problems caused by smoking, not just to active but passive smokers as well. It also helps to make people aware of what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic in order to maintain a healthy living environment.

5 - June - World Environment Day -

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was also created in 1972. It was this day, in the year 1972, in Sweden that the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment was held where people gathered from all over the world to discuss the increasing environmental problems in the world. This day is one of the important drivers of environment initiatives undertaken by the United Nations.

8 - June - World Oceans Day -

This day was created at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. This day highlights the importance of marine life and the threats they face. It is an opportunity to highlight the importance of oceans and the threats they face today. Though it is not officially designated by the UN, efforts are being made towards this direction.

17 - June - World Day to combat Desertification and drought -

This day was designated by the UN General Assembly and marks the anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. It highlights the need to tackle the problem of degradation of drylands and to combat desertification.

11 - July - World Population Day -

This day focusses at the problems arising due to rapidly increasing population. It was started by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989. It also commemorates the date on which the world population approximately 5 billion in 1987.

14 - 16 -September - Clean up the World Campaign -

These days are dedicated to inspire action across the globe to clean, fix and conserve their environment. In conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme, it brings together 35 million volunteers in about 120 countries who participate in a range of activities aimed towards cleaning up their local environment.

16 - September - World Ozone Day -

This day commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer in 1987. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as the International day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in 1995. The day draws focussed attention and action towards protection of the ozone layer.

3 - October -World Habitat Day -

This day was designated by the UN General Assembly on the first Monday of October to highlight the need for the world to realise the right to adequate shelter and for responsibility towards future habitat for humans.

4 - October - World Animal Welfare Day -

This day highlights the importance of animal welfare and various groups participate to increase public awareness on animal issues.

13 - October - International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction -

This day was designated by the UN at its General Assembly initially for a period from 1990-1999. In 2001, it was decided to maintain this day to promote natural disaster reduction and increase awareness on prevention, preparedness and mitigation of disasters across the globe.

15 - October - World Blog Action Day-

October 15, 2007 was the first World Blog Action Day where bloggers around the world blog on environment and environmental issues. The choice of topic is what led to a sea of activity in the blog world.

6 - November - International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict -

This day was designated by the UN at its General Assembly on 5th November 2001 and was first observed on 6th Nov, 2002. It highlights the damage caused to the environment in times of conflicts and wars.
