Responsive Education on Environment by Hamari Kaksha

Hamari Kaksha- a class apart, is a voluntary organization that works for the upliftment of children that belong to economically backward strata of society. It tries to provide opportunities of learning and understanding and uses innovative teaching methods to assist the kids in doing well in all spheres of life.

On August 06, 2007, this school gave a practical response to environment education for these kids. The organization had been allotted a school by the UT administration to use for teaching these kids. The organization took an onus on the clean up act for the school campus. All children, teachers as well as the parents of these children participated. Chandigarh Municipal Corporation as well as the Chandigarh Administration lend in their help to assist them. With the efforts of all of them, all wild grass that was spread across the entire school was removed. The soil was prepared to plant trees as well as grow grass. 70 trees and 500 chrysanthemum saplings have been planted inside and outside the school premises.

The idea is to make children responsible towards their surrounding environment and sensitize them about various environmental issues. Since many parents of these children are gardeners, the organization has also come with a unique model of in house plants in the pots which could rather be used in various occasions instead of bouquets. They plan to create more of these models by Diwali and are hoping that everyone gets into this act by presenting each other these unique models that will grow in future instead of dead flowers.

Mr. S.K. Setia, DPI Schools, Chandigarh and Mr. Ishwar Singh, Director, Environment Department, Chandigarh Administration also participated in the plantation drive. Mr. Ishwar Singh gave tips about taking care of the plants and trees to the kids. These children have a lot of enthusiasm and are determined to take care of these trees as well as plan to have their very own vegetable gardens in the school.

We wish them best of luck for their future endeavours.
